Heywood couple's Macmillan coffee morning raises hundreds of pounds for the cause

Date published: 01 October 2019

An all-out Macmillan coffee morning hosted by Margaret and Denis Hartle, of Heywood, has raised over £1,500.

Held at their home on Saturday 28 September, Margaret and Denis transformed their entire house with tombola games and raffles in addition to the tasty treats on offer.

Margaret’s annual coffee morning is part of her yearly fundraising for Macmillan, including car boot sales and selling homemade pies, jams, chutneys and cakes, which has raised just short of £4,000 this year.

She began holding a coffee morning four years ago after her sister-in-law, Caroline, died of cancer, and has raised thousands for the charity.

Margaret said: “Having survived cancer myself, although with side effects, I am so appreciative that I have been spared.

“I have had the pleasure of being part of my family growing up and want to give something back in return.”

In addition to the cakes and bakes, Denis opened up his garage to fellow petrol heads to show off his cars and bike that he built from scratch.

The first Macmillan coffee morning took place in 1990, raising over £165.5 million for the charity.
