Former Mayor presents £10,000 to Springhill Hospice

Date published: 04 September 2019

Springhill Hospice recently received a cheque of £10,000 on Friday 23 August, presented to them by the former Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale, Councillor Mohammed Zaman and his daughter, Naaira Zaman.

Councillor Zaman, who was Mayor of Rochdale during 2018/19, raised over £70,000 for his six chosen charities last year, as well as supporting other local charities and community groups.

The money was raised through a variety of different events including the Mayor's Charity Ball back in April, a sleep out at Rochdale Football Club and collections at mosques across the borough.

The cheque of £10,000 was presented to the Chief Executive of Springhill Hospice, Julie Halliwell who, after a chat about the hospice and the services it provides, gave Councillor Zaman and his daughter a tour around the hospice and its gardens.

It currently costs £3.2million a year - or £8,928 a day - to keep the doors of Springhill Hospice open.

Julie said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Councillor Zaman and his daughter Naaira during his mayoral year.

"Both him and Naaira have been hugely supportive of the hospice, turning up to events, and spending time in the hospice with patients and their families.

"We are so grateful to everyone on the Mayor's Charity Committee who have all worked so hard to raise such an incredible amount of money during the year, and also grateful to all those who have supported the events.”

Other charities that Councillor Zaman supported during his time as Mayor include: Rochdale Heartbeat, Petrus, Parkinson’s UK, Rochdale Community Partnership and Moorland Children’s Home.
