Date published: 29 August 2019

A Middleton care home is spreading joy through a new postcard appeal.

Briarmede Residential Home has joined the ‘Postcards of Kindness’ campaign, sending postcards around the world - and receiving them.

Initially started in 2018 by Your Health Limited, a Derbyshire-based care company, ‘Postcards of Kindness’ was launched to trigger happy memories in elderly residents.

So far the Briarmede residents have received cards from Greece, Wales, London, Kent, Yorkshire, Malaysia and Scotland, and have sent their own to Scotland, London, Essex and to a home in Manchester.

The residents have even sent a postcard to the Nepalese Gurkha soldiers in the British Army.

Briarmede activities co-ordinator Shona Scott said: “This is a really good idea as it combats loneliness and gets people talking about holidays and places they have visited; we do a similar thing at Christmas, sending and receiving cards from around the world.

“The ladies and gentlemen have enjoyed reading the cards and writing them to send around both the country and the world. One lady sent a card to her sister about our recent day trip to Lytham St Anne’s.”

She added: “We are also encouraging friends and families to send cards from their travels.”
