Speed checks on Birch Road

Date published: 02 August 2019

Councillors from Wardle and West Littleborough carried out a speed check on Birch Road on Wednesday evening (31 July).

Councillors Rina Paolucci and Ashley Dearnley joined the neighbourhood policing team and cadets, plus several members of the community, to monitor speeds of vehicles using speed detection devices.

Volunteers receive appropriate training, and are supported by neighbourhood policing team staff.

The scheme caters for real or perceived speed related offending, and through partnership with the community, aims to:

  • reduce death and injury on the road
  • improve the quality of life for local communities
  • reduce the speed of vehicles to the speed limit
  • increase public awareness of inappropriate speed

Councillor Paolucci said: “We carried out the speed checks on two locations on Birch Road and, although the road wasn't as busy as we had hoped, the police were able to get some registration numbers of speeding motorists who will each receive a letter of caution in the post.

“The only way to tackle speeding is by using a joint approach. We all have a role to play in this and we must send a clear message to our friends, family and colleagues that speeding puts lives in danger and is not acceptable.

“Thank you to the police, cadets and local residents for supporting our speed gun event.”

Councillor Dearnley added: “This has been another successful local initiative on trying to stop speeding, responding to the concerns of residents.”
