Demolition of Nowster pub to begin on 1 August

Date published: 29 July 2019

Demolition of a former pub branded an ‘eyesore’ will begin on Thursday 1 August, paving the way for a new health centre in Middleton.

The Nowster public house on Oldham Road, a former JW Lees pub, will be replaced with a new facility which will include a GP surgery and dental practice.

Applicants Dr Louise Thompson and Dr Glyn Stockton currently run a practice from a temporary building named The Hive, on Clough Street. An increasing number of patients using the surgery has made a move to a larger building all the more urgent.

They said: “We are delighted to announce that demolition of the Nowster Pub on Oldham Road - the site of our proposed new Health Centre - will commence this Thursday, 1 August.

“An incredible amount of work has gone into us reaching this stage.”

Permission to demolish the pub – which has been vacant since 2011 – and replace it with a health centre was granted by Rochdale Borough Council in March 2019, after plans were submitted in October 2018.
