Fridges ‘dumped’ outside College Bank flats

Date published: 24 July 2019

A local resident has complained about fridges being ‘dumped’ by Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) outside the garages on College Bank.

Tentercroft resident Roy Kitcher says the fridges are being left outside the garages when awaiting collection but are being left for ages before being removed.

He said: “The latest ones were left on Thursday before being picked up on Monday. Unless I ring up to complain, they are just being left there, even being full of food in the summer.

“I’ve had to move some of the fridges they’ve dumped before so we can get in the garages, which we pay extra for.”

He added: “This has been going on for about two years.”

RBH says it will now look to improve the collection arrangements after some delays in collecting the refrigerators have occured.

A spokesman for RBH said: “Over the past year, our furniture re-use scheme has saved over 35 tonnes of furniture from landfill – the equivalent weight of six African elephants. The re-use scheme also provides low-cost furniture for our tenants.

“However, some fridges left behind by tenants who leave their homes are not suitable for re-use. We also recover fridges that have been fly-tipped on RBH land. These fridges need to be disposed of in a safe and responsible manner, and we employ a specialist contractor to do this.

“We are aware that on a small number of occasions, there has been a delay in the collection of these fridges. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by this, and we are currently looking to improve the arrangements for collection.”
