Electric car drivers in Greater Manchester get boost

Date published: 04 July 2019

Electric car drivers in Greater Manchester are finding it easier to get around, thanks to the installation of 13 rapid chargers by InstaVolt.

The company, one of the UK’s leaders in rapid charging, has installed the chargers at strategic locations where drivers can easily charge up as part of their normal journeys. The sites have also been chosen so drivers can grab a drink or pick up shopping while they charge.

In Greater Manchester, InstaVolt has installed chargers at:

  • Hopwood Service Station, Middleton
  • Lime Square Retail Park, Manchester
  • Rainbow Garage, Salford
  • Mauldeth Services, Manchester
  • Limes Service Station, Worsley
  • Gorton Services, Manchester
  • BP Audenshaw, Audenshaw

Unlike many other charging stations, all of InstaVolt’s are available for electric vehicle drivers to use on a pay-as-you-go basis with no subscription, card or membership needed. Drivers simply tap their contactless credit or debit card to pay, or use their smart watch or phone to pay if it’s set up for contactless payments.

InstaVolt CEO, Tim Payne says that Greater Manchester was an important location for it to focus on, with high demand for rapid chargers from local electric vehicle drivers.

According to the most recent data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), sales of battery electric vehicles in the year to May 2019 were up 60.2% on the same period last year, and with more manufacturers bringing electric vehicles to the market in the next 12 month,s this rate of growth is only set to increase.

Mr Payne said: “We’re excited to be adding to the rapid charging landscape in Greater Manchester. The number of people driving electric vehicles is on the rise and it’s important that the infrastructure is there for them to charge up.

“The reaction to our chargers from drivers locally has been very positive and it’s proof that a contactless payment, simple approach is the way forward.”
