New shopping link for Rochdale
Date published: 12 August 2008
Shoppers in Rochdale now have an easier way of getting to and from supermarkets within the area thanks to a new door-to-door service launched this week.
Rochdale Shopping Link will help people aged over 60, or with mobility difficulties, get to supermarkets and then drop them back home once they have done their shopping.
The service is funded by Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) and Rochdale’s Partnerships for Older People Projects (POPPS).
GMPTA’s spokesperson for Rochdale, Councillor Zulfiqar Ali, said: “This is a great service that will help many people in Rochdale get out to their supermarket much more easily.
“Fresh food shopping is very important, and one of the things that can be difficult for older people, so this service will be a real help.
“Carrying shopping bags on normal bus services isn’t always easy but this service is door-to-door, like a taxi. The only difference is you need to book a day in advance and share your trip with other people, so there is an opportunity to make new friends too.
“I’m sure that the service will be very popular and I’m glad that Rochdale residents will soon be benefiting from it.”
A similar service was launched in Oldham in 2005 and has proved very popular, with passengers making more than 10,000 trips on the service last year.
GMPTA’s Chairman, Councillor Matt Colledge, added: “Services like this are essential to local people and can make a real difference to their quality of life. Not only do we fund regular buses that are not provided commercially by the bus companies, but we also have a wide network of community transport services that are very popular and meet the needs of specific people. I hope people will spread the word about Rochdale Shopping Link so as many people as possible can take advantage.”
Rochdale Shopping Link is operated by Radio Cabs and will provide links to the main supermarkets in the area between 9.30am and 5.30pm Monday to Friday.
To book a journey passengers should call 0800 018 2333. Fares for GMPTE pass holders cost £1.10 for a single or £2 for a return. Normal adult fares are £2.20 single and £4 return.
