Peace group commemorates 63rd Anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Date published: 11 August 2008
Members of Rochdale and Littleborough Peace Group gathered at Hollingworth Lake yesterday (Sunday 10 August 2008) for their annual commemoration of all those who have died and are dying in wars. The group unfurled a banner declaring “Remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki”.
They shared silence and readings, which recalled the suffering of civilians and soldiers in war and the responsibility of humanity to strive for peace and justice.
Finally, they floated a lantern and white flowers on the water to commemorate the dead.
Their readings, included the declaration: “We affirm people over property, community over individualism; Respect for others in all their diversity.
"We choose struggle rather than indifference. We choose to be friends of the earth and of one another, rather than exploiters.
"We choose to be citizens rather than subjects.
"We choose a nuclear free future, And we will settle for nothing less.”
