New Scouting Group opens in Rochdale

Date published: 28 February 2019

The Scout group is being re-opened at Syke Community Base and Church in March, providing exciting opportunities for local children and young people, and volunteering opportunities for adults.

40th Rochdale (Syke) Scout Group is launching its new Cubs section for boys and girls aged 8 years -10 half years old, on Thursday 7 March.

Cubs is an exciting section, with a programme that offers a huge variety of activities including outdoor and adventurous activities, arts, and fitness, as well as camps and residential opportunities.

Prior to their official opening, the group is holding a free Open Day on Sunday 3 March, 2.00pm – 4.00pm at the Community Base and Chapel.

Children and young people of all ages are welcome to come along have a go at some Scouting activities, including soft archery, slime making, and toasting marshmallows, and to find out more.

Dave Tolan, Group Scout Leader, says: “This is a really exciting time for Scouting in Syke.

“It’s great to be re-opening the group and we have some fantastic plans for the future, we hope to attract as many young people as possible to the open day and the new Cubs section so that they can discover the world of opportunities that Scouting can open up to them.”

It is proposed that the group will be opening a Scout section for young people aged 10-and-a-half-years-old to 14-years-old soon, and possibily opening a Beaver section for 6 to 8-year-olds at a later point.

This of course, is dependent on more volunteer leaders and committee members getting involved.

District Commissioner for Pennine, Alan Sharkey, said: “We need volunteers to put Syke Scouting on the map again.

“We have a variety of roles to offer, and there really is something for everyone.

“Volunteering is flexible too, even if you can’t offer your time every week, there’s lots of things to do behind the scenes or you can work on a rota system with other leaders and helpers.

“Scouting opens the door to so many amazing opportunities for its adult members too. You really do develop skills for life.”
