Half Acre residents take a trip down memory lane

Half Acre House Care Home in Rochdale underlined its pioneering spirit when its residents enjoyed a special day out to the town’s original Co-operative shop.

The trip down memory lane enabled residents to chart the history of the famous movement, from its humble beginnings in 1844 through to today’s world renowned brand.

A packed itinerary included a visit to the original Co-op store on Toad Lane, a special viewing of early information films charting the Co-operative history at Pioneers Museum and unique access to stored artefacts from decades past.

Staff at the museum fielded a range of questions from inquisitive residents, who completed the day with a group photo outside the famous location. 

Half Acre takes pride in organising a range of events, days out and educational visits for its residents throughout the year to help improve their mental wellbeing.

The home recently teamed up with students from the Prince’s Trust Charity to help residents learn more about modern communication methods and share childhood memories. 

Anita Lewis, manager at Half Acre House, said: “A number of residents asked if they could visit the Co-operative store, after it came up in conversation at the care home. We were only too delighted to organise the special visit and it was memorable day out for everyone.

“I would like to thank everyone at the Pioneers Museum for making us so welcome and bringing alive the Co-operative story, which is such a proud part of Rochdale’s rich history.”
