New record employment rate

Date published: 24 January 2019

The UK has continued to beat its own record-breaking job figures with a new record employment rate of over 32 million people in work in November – more than ever before.

The unemployment rate remained at a joint 43-year low of 4.0% with the employment rate* reaching a new record high of 75.8%.

Real wages increased for the tenth month in a row just before Christmas, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) also show. Regular pay grew 3.3% on the year – its fastest growth in almost a decade.

Northern Powerhouse Minister, Jake Berry MP for Rossendale, said: “The Northern Powerhouse is about boosting jobs and the economy of the North through investment in industry, innovation, skills, transport and culture.

“We are supporting businesses with the investment they need to grow.”

*Employment rate: The number of people in employment in the UK is measured by the Labour Force Survey (LFS) and consists of people aged 16 and over who did one hour or more of paid work per week (as an employee or self-employed), those who had a job that they were temporarily away from, those on government-supported training and employment programmes, and those doing unpaid family work.

Employment is a different, but similar, concept to jobs. Employment is a measure of people, and a person with more than one job would therefore be counted once in the employment estimates.
