Redwood School pupil wins council leader's festive card competition

Date published: 24 December 2018

The winner of the Rochdale Borough Council leader’s Christmas card competition has been announced.

14 year old Callum McGeachie, a pupil at Redwood School in Rochdale was chosen for the council leader’s official card after winning a festive design competition.

Last month council leader Allen Brett invited local schools to enter the competition and Callum’s design, which features three festive Christmas trees was chosen.

His artwork has now been made into a professionally printed card as well as an animated electronic card with falling snow that has been sent to hundreds of individuals and organisations across Greater Manchester with Callum’s name and school on.

This week Councillor Brett visited the secondary special school in Rochdale to thank Callum personally and present him with his own Christmas card, a £50 gift voucher and sweet treats for his classmates. The council leader also took a tour of the school, including the recently added extension whilst meeting headteacher Ms Clare John and assistant head Simon Alcock.

Councillor Brett said: “When I asked schools to help come up with a design for my Christmas card I never expected to see quite so many excellent pieces of art.  I was very impressed with them all but particularly liked Callum’s design, of a traditional festive scene created in a modern eye catching style.

"It’s made a good looking card as well as a smart electronic greeting and I’ve had some great feedback from people who’ve received it. Well done Callum!  I was also pleased to visit the school, meet Callum and some of his classmates as well as the teaching staff.”
