Rochdale delegates welcome news that British Airways is to resume flights to Pakistan after decade-long hiatus

Date published: 20 December 2018

British Airways is to resume flights to Pakistan after a decade-long hiatus, a decision that has long been called for by Rochdale delegates, who have lobbied hard to resume the flight path.

The airline pulled out of the country in September 2008 after a terror attack at a hotel killed 54 people, six of whom were British citizens.

The flights will resume three times a week from Heathrow to the new Islamabad International Airport from 2 June 2019.

Councillor Allen Brett, leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “This is an important symbolic gesture and demonstrates confidence in Pakistan. It will also make is easier for Rochdale residents with family and friends in the area to travel to this fascinating part of the world, which very much impressed me when I visited.

“I would love to see BA implement direct flights from Manchester and this is something we will be pushing for in the future.”

Councillor Aasim Rashid said: “As delegation co-ordinator, I am really happy with the outcome of our tour to Pakistan.

“We not only discussed the flight issue but other issues for the betterment of the Pakistan community living in Rochdale, as well as the north west.

“Our delegation also emphasised that international cricket should also resume so we can see the England cricket team playing in Pakistan in the near future.”

Tony Lloyd MP added: “I’m delighted to learn that British Airways is once again flying between London and Islamabad. The large British Pakistani community in Rochdale and the north west of England will benefit from this move.

“It shows confidence in the future both for people and business connections between the north west and Pakistan.
