School holds science spectacular

Date published: 18 December 2018

Pupils at Lowerplace Primary School in Rochdale were treated to a fun-filled day of physics activities, following on from the visit of local science teacher Chris Lowe to international scientific research centre CERN.

In the summer, The Ogden Trust awarded Chris a once in a lifetime trip to CERN in Switzerland. He promised to follow his trip up with a special science day for pupils so he could share his knowledge.

To bring science alive in the classroom, Chris created the Atomic Games, where pupils competed in small groups to create atoms using balls and hula-hoops. He also got them to create paper plate style atoms, where they worked together to make new molecules - all part of the interactive atom learning.

Chris said: “I always wanted to follow up from my trip to CERN with a special day for pupils and I’m delighted with how engaged and interested they all were. I’m really passionate about getting young people interested in science and opening up that career field for them.”

The day of activity saw pupils design their own timeline of the history of the Universe, covering the Big Bang, the first stars, the first galaxies and dinosaurs roaming Earth.

Councillor Kieran Heakin, Rochdale Council’s cabinet member for children’s services, said: “It is really great how Chris has been able to bring some of his CERN visit learning to the pupils at Lowerplace. The school is so passionate about science and this is great to see.”

Lowerplace Primary School are passionate about science and this year alone they have opened the borough’s first ever Phiz Lab, when former pupil Sir Peter Ogden opened the facility back in January and in the summer they held a Great Science Share event, where several schools from across the borough came to Lowerplace to showcase their scientific experiments.
