Barnardo’s cake bake that promises to make a difference

Date published: 28 November 2018

Bakers across Greater Manchester are being asked to roll up their sleeves and ready their mixing bowls to take part in the first Barnardo’s Big Bake event.

The event, which kicked off in November, will see people across the country baking - or buying – an array of sweet treats and selling them to raise money to help vulnerable children, young people and families who are supported by Barnardo’s.

The children’s charity supports some of Greater Manchester’s most vulnerable children including those in care, at risk of homelessness, those who have suffered sexual abuse and young people with disabilities and additional needs.

Barnardo’s Head of Fundraising, Gemma Cornwell, said: “The Barnardo’s Big Bake is the perfect opportunity to get together with friends and family and enjoy some delicious treats, knowing that the money you’re raising will be used to support children facing some of today’s most urgent issues. Every cake that is crafted, bought or cobbled together will make a huge difference to the children and young people that we support across Greater Manchester. On behalf of those children, we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who takes part.”

The children’s charity has launched a booklet designed to inspire budding bakers. This features actor and Barnardo’s ambassador Fay Ripley sharing her favourite chocolate tray-bake recipe as well as ideas and suggestions on how to promote your event.

£50 raised at a Barnardo’s Big Bake event could help pay for two young carers to take party in group activities where they can make friends and build confidence. A donation of £100 could help pay for toys and resources needed for one of Barnardo’s specialist counselling rooms.
