Nurses invite Rochdale community to find out more about liver disease

Nurses are inviting the public to find out more about liver disease at a free talk hosted by Gastroenterology nurse specialists, Lynne Kendrick and Diane Coulter will give guests the opportunity to find out more about the second largest organ in the body.

Rochdale Infirmary is one of five hospitals and community services run by the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group, which is made up of two Trusts, Salford Royal and The Pennine Acute.

The liver performs 500 hundred complex functions daily. Attendees will learn all about the different types of liver disease, as well as what care patients who have liver disease can expect.

With more than 100 different types of liver disease, which together affect at least 2 million people in the UK, the talk will also look at how excessive alcohol consumption is not the only cause of liver disease.

Currently it is estimated that 20-30 percent of the UK population have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), with causes including obesity, diabetes, hereditary conditions, and blood borne viruses.

Gastroenterology Nurse Specialist, Lynne Kendrick, said: “Liver disease is the third most common preventative cause of death in the UK. Over the Christmas period, people are particularly vulnerable, so I’m looking forward to raising awareness of liver disease and how it can be identified early and often reversed by simple life style changes.”

The free talk will be held on Wednesday 5 December, 11.00am – 12.00noon in the Education Centre at Rochdale Infirmary. The event is free and is one of a series of ‘Medicine for Members’ events arranged to give the public and the Trust’s public members a greater insight into their local hospital and the services it provides. So far, more than 12,500 people have signed up to become Trust members.
