St Cuthbert's mark the centenary of the ending of World War One

Remembrance Assemblies

To mark the centenary of the ending of World War One assemblies have been centred on commemorating those lost and injured during the conflict.

Assemblies for each year group had a Remembrance Service which mirrored the same format as commemorations across the country, in front of a cenotaph with wreaths to remember. The Last Post was played and a representative from each form laid a poppy wreath during a poem “For the Fallen”.

Mr Shields, headteacher, led assemblies and he reminded pupils of those lost, some of them children, women and people of many faiths and countries, joined together side by side in battle and without their sacrifice our lives would be very different from today.

The many millions of people involved and lost in war should never be forgotten and how this must never happen again.

Soldier to Commemorate 100 Years of Remembrance

St Cuthbert's were very privileged to have a silhouette of a WW1 soldier installed last week. The silhouette is intended to help remember and symbolise the communities that took part in WW1 and the lives of those injured and lost. It stands at the front of school within view of our wider community.

Many thanks to Kerf Developments for fabricating the soldier, Manchester Galvanising for a fantastic all weather finish and Swift Security Products for organising and fabricating the stand, powder coating and for fitting on site.

Mrs Burlison and Mr Kenny together with six pupils attended the Remembrance Service at Rochdale Cenotaph. They took along a wreath to lay on behalf of all pupils and staff at St. Cuthbert’s.

Outdoor Remembrance Display

Year 9 students put their best feet forward and braved the torrential Rochdale weather to place the poppies made by the whole school in front of our memorial soldier. The display contains all kinds of different poppies which were made during some lessons and also within student's own time. The school are thrilled with the results which also compliment over 100 poppies which are displayed on our perimeter railings.

Year 7 Human Poppy

Year 7 are pictured showing that they were keeping Remembrance Day close to their hearts with a show of solidarity as they created a human poppy in their PE lesson. Following the Remembrance Day assemblies this week, the pupils were keen to show respect to the soldiers who gave their lives for our futures.

Henry Oswald William Remembrance Wreath

Miss Light’s form class have been busy creating a remembrance wreath. Students have written prayers and thank you messages on their handprints, to create the leaves. They are remembering all of the soldiers from our local area and this wreath is dedicated to:

Henry Oswald William who designed St Joseph’s Church in Heywood and also St. John the Baptist Church in Rochdale. Henry Oswald William - WWI Army Flying Corp Pilot who tragically died in action in 1917.

Whole School Remembers

The whole school gathered outside, and together we listened to the Last Post which signalled the start of the two minute silence. Everybody was absolutely silent to show their respect for all those who gave their lives for us. Following this two pupils from each year group walked to our Flanders Field to lay their year group’s poppy wreath.

Bring out the Bunting

A celebratory lunch was held on Monday 12 November. There was lots of cheerful bunting and wartime music piped through the PA system. The screens around school were also showing poignant pictures to accompany the occasion. Students were treated to a commemorative cake to finish off the party atmosphere.
