Poem from Parkfield Primary School remembering those who lost their lives in the world wars

Date published: 12 November 2018

Parkfield Primary School have been remembering those who lost their lives in the world wars and writing their own poems as part of their commemorative work last week and have sent a poem from a year 6 pupil.

Mrs Palfreyman, Headteacher said: “I would like though to share this poem that moved me to tears, it was written by Tegan, a year 6 pupil as part of their commemorative work last week.

“It describes a gentleman who is taken back to the war when playing a song on his piano. I feel so proud that our children are so in tune with what happened, and as important, the feelings they are left to deal with afterwards.

“It is just a beautiful poem.”

The Piano

Precious memories fill my head as I sit patiently at my grand piano

The piece I am about to play has a very special meaning,

The room echoes with all of my thoughts and feelings

I then begin to play

In the corner of my eye, she is with me, playing our tune, together

She gives me a short kiss goodbye on my wrinkly aging cheek

As she fades, my mind is consumed

By a memory of the worst day of my life

When my wrinkled hand pressed the lowest keys, I am back in the war

My friend Carter, steps from behind a stone wall to take a final shot,

I try to pull him in but it is too late

He has been shot

There he lay in my arms

A tsunami of sorrow floods my body as I lay him to rest, forever

Playing, I switch to the high notes,

When my mind travels to when I was a child

Crouching I opened the blue box to see a hobby horse lay before my very eyes

Riding around, I tripped on the stool of my grand piano

Beside me, sits my grandson, as we played this joyful melody

He hit the final note to finish the tune

Love, death and birth will always carry on

Even when my hands have played their last.
