Gordon Riggs WW1 Commemorative Display

Date published: 10 November 2018

Staff at Gordon Riggs, Moss Bridge, Rochdale have created a World War One Commemorative Display to honour both human and animal sacrifices incurred during the ‘Great War’ of 1914-1918.

It is hoped that customers visiting the Garden Centre over the Remembrance weekend, particularly Sunday 11 November, will take time to stand at the display and reflect on what it represents.

The display features a ‘Silent Soldier’ figure standing in a bed of Rosemary, which, at the time, was used to signify remembrance. The traditional red poppy was not introduced until later and has been used in conjunction with the Rosemary.

Next to the red poppies, purple poppies are used to commemorate all the animals that served and died alongside the British and Allied troops.

These poppies are set in a bed of Pansies, which represent ‘thoughts’ and were a popular theme used on post cards in that era.
