Charges dropped against couple arrested at Tesco over water row

Date published: 31 October 2018

An Oldham couple who were arrested at the Rochdale Tesco store last month will no longer face charges.

Nasir Hussain and Mahira Hussain were charged with assault of a police constable after an incident at Tesco, believed to be have stemmed from how much water the couple were allowed to purchase.

After appearing at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court at the end of October, no further action will be taken against the pair.

A police spokesperson said: “On Monday 29 October, police were made aware of the Crown Prosecution Service’s intention to discontinue an investigation into two people who were arrested on suspicion of police assault following an incident at Tesco on Silk Street, Rochdale.

“As this matter is being independently investigated by the IOPC, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.”

The Independent Office for Police Conduct began an investigation after Greater Manchester Police received a complaint alleging excessive use of force and discrimination by the arresting officers.

The police conduct investigation continues.
