Liz Mcinnes MP statement on the budget

Date published: 30 October 2018

Liz McInnes, Member of Parliament for Heywood and Middleton, has made the following statement regarding yesterday’s government Budget announcement: “The government claim that austerity is coming to an end, but the facts of this budget confirm that this is far from the case.

“Our schools have suffered 8% cuts in funding per pupil since 2010, but the government yesterday announced more funding for potholes than for our children’s education.

“There is no increase in funding for the police, even though GMP will have lost around 2,000 officers by 2020.

“The £650m announced for adult social care services is less than half what the King’s Fund estimates is required to meet demand.

“Nearly 1.5 million elderly people are not getting the care they need – an increase of 20% in just 2 years. And the NHS has experienced the slowest spending growth in its history.

“The £20bn promised for the NHS is “simply not enough” according to the Health Foundation. Shockingly, it was revealed this week that since 2010 there has been a 58% increase in the number of children’s operations cancelled.

“This budget offered no solutions to any of these problems, and it lets down police, teachers, nurses and doctors, pupils, parents and patients.
