The GoFundMe hopes to raise £5,000 towards Gareth’s funeral and to rebuild his family’s home, which was significantly damaged by fire on Monday morning.

Author of the fundraiser, Charlie Hoyle wrote: “Gareth Brookes is clearly loved by many people with everyone saying he always had a smile on his face and is a top bloke.

“Let's keep his smile going by helping his family at this time to rebuild their home. In the coming days, we will be looking for trades people to help with their free time to get the house they deserve and need along with donations of household items and clothes.

“As Gareth sadly passed away, any donations towards his funeral would be much appreciated.

“Some may say this is too soon but there never is a right time in situations like this, never. Nothing will remove the feelings Michelle and the children have but comfort, love and support will make things more bearable for them, we hope.”

Police were called by the fire service shortly before 8am on Monday 29 October to a report of a man on fire at a property on Kirklee Road, Rochdale.

A second man, aged in his 20s, escaped the property from an upstairs window. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police launched a joint investigation into the cause of the fire alongside Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire and a file will be passed to the coroner.
