At risk groups urged to get free flu vaccine

The flu vaccination is now available for those at risk.

The quick and simple flu vaccination is the best protection from the virus and they are offered free to those residents who could be at risk of developing severe complications from it such as; bronchitis, pneumonia, the worsening of an existing condition or even death.

In 2018/19, the flu vaccination is being offered to: 

• Those aged 65 years and over
• Those aged six months to under 65 in clinical risk groups
• Pregnant women
• Those living in a residential or nursing home
• The main carer of an older or disabled person
• Children aged 2-3 and those in reception class, and school years 1-5 (to those in year 5 for the first time)
• People with learning disabilities and those who care for them

Those living or working with people in at risk groups should also get themselves vaccinated.

Vaccinations for healthy children in schools years reception, one, two, three and four will usually be administered in school in the form of a nasal spray.

Councillor Sara Rowbotham, Rochdale Borough Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “Catching the flu can be unpleasant and for some people it can even be life-threatening, so the best way to protect yourself and those around you is to get the vaccination. I urge everyone to book their jabs as soon as possible and help our borough to stay healthy this winter.” 

Dr Chris Duffy, chair of NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Clinical Commissioning Group (HMR CCG), said: “People can underestimate the seriousness of flu and don’t take advantage of the free flu jab. If you are in an at risk group it is vital you have your vaccine.

“You can make an appointment with your GP practice or at your local pharmacy so book yourself in now to protect yourself and loved ones.”
