Mayor drops into Tudor Court to surprise 102 year old patient Edna on her birthday

Date published: 25 October 2018

When staff at the Northern Care Alliance’s Tudor Court Community Intermediate Care Centre in Heywood learned that patient Edna Hughes was turning 102 years old, they decided to throw a party to celebrate on 23 October.

Staff even invited Rochdale Mayor, Mohammed Zaman, to drop in as a special VIP surprise visitor, and Edna was thrilled.

Staff invited Edna’s family, friends and fellow Tudor Court patients to join the celebration and even laid on some food and drinks, and dressed the dining room in balloons and banners to set the party mood.

Edna Hughes, 102, said: “It is very good of everybody to come to my birthday party today to help me celebrate. Who would have thought I’d reach this age! Having this party has really made me happy.”

Mayor Mohammed Zaman said: “It is really good to see people like Edna celebrating such a long life, it is great to see her feeling so great and looking so well, she obviously knows the secret to living a good life.”

Heidi Tombling, Centre Manager, Tudor Court, Intermediate Care Centre, Heywood said: “We all wish Edna a very happy birthday. It is a privilege to look after Edna and to be able to get her back home to continue living independently on her own.”

Paul Lavin, Scheme Manager from Alice Ingham Court, where Edna is a resident, said: “Happy birthday to Edna, our longest tenant, who has been with us for the last 40 years. Up until January she has been totally independent, even doing all her own washing. When she comes home from Tudor Court we have arranged for her to have a downstairs flat, and we are all looking forward to her coming home again.”
