Beech House School

A select group of Senior school pupils visited the TCT Inspired minds show at the Birmingham N.E.C. he TCT Show is one of the world’s leading 3D printing, additive manufacturing and product development events with over 300 exhibitors.

Despite the usual traffic problems, the party arrived raring to get involved in some learning.

Once they had picked up their lanyards the pupils moved easily through the milling crowds of exhibitors and curious attendees in the cavernous hall.

The 3-hour additive manufacturing experience was split into two sections, a workshop in which the students designed a lightweight wheel for the Bloodhound Supersonic Car using Autodesk Fusion 360 professional 3D modelling software.

These were then printed using the same 3D printing machines we use have in school.

Students will use the wheels they designed to assemble a Bloodhound Balloon car ready for racing the cars back in school.

After a reviving lunch the pupils attended a presentation about 3D printing and the industrial applications, with the opportunity to question the expert, look at 3D models and learn more about 3D printing careers.

This included a case study of 3D printing, and engineering careers resources for the students.

To wind down after the intense learning pupils then toured the TCT show, to experience the excitement of this industry, visiting many different exhibitors questioning them on their technology, products and careers opportunities, and picking up a few freebies along the way.

Netball

The girls were extremely nervous about their first match back since the summer which showed in their performance for the first third.

Losing 4-2 due to some silly mistakes, it was time for a team talk and a few changes.

The second third started brilliantly with excellent goal keeping skills from Mia Greenwood, and some lovely triangular passing formations from Ellie Jenkinson, Jess Bennett and Millie Cooper.

Our goal shooter Millie showed excellent composure on the ball when shooting, but unfortunately, our concentration levels dropped, and we let Hulme Hall take the second third by 9-6.  We then made the decision for Jess Bennett to play centre and Ellie Jenkinson to play goal attack.

We looked excellent on the ball, we finally started working together as a team, demonstrating great communication skills, and brilliant passing tactics from Hiba Javed and Ellie Jenkinson.

We won the final third 7 goal to 2. Resulting in a 15-15 draw at the final whistle.

Well done to Maddy Wilkinson, Millie Cooper and Elana El-Hage on their recorded performance for the GCSE moderation, and huge congratulations to Ellie Jenkinson for man of the match.

Team: Ellie Jenkinson (captain), Jess Bennett, Hiba Javed, Maddy Jakcson, Mia Greenwood, Maya Servio, Millie Cooper, Hira Iqbal and Elana El-Hage.

Beech House would also like to thank the staff at Hulme Hall Grammar School for their umpiring of the game and allowing us to play at their school. Your girls performed admirably, and we are looking forward to playing them again.
