Rochdale bell ringers recruited for Ringing Remembers project

Date published: 04 October 2018

Bell ringers have been recruited across Rochdale for the national Ringing Remembers Project, a campaign to recruit 1,400 new bell ringers to honour the 1,400 ringers who lost their lives in the Great War.

The new ringers are being trained to ring the church bells to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, when thousands of bells will ring out from churches across the country.

Some of the successful recruits include St Barnabas, St Chad’s and Christ Church Healey,

St Barnabas Church in Shore has recruited 14 new ringers of all ages for its bell tower, making it one of the biggest recruiting towers in the country for the national Ringing Remembers campaign.

St Chad’s Parish Church has recruited two new ringers, as has Christ Church Healey.

John Maloney, of Christ Church, said: “Christ Church Healey has recruited two new bell ringers to add to the 1,400 that are hopefully being recruited nationwide.”

Tower captain at St Chad’s Debra Holmes said: “We have recruited two bell ringers since our open day in April. They are making steady progress though we could do with some more. We have seven bellringers in total, but we would like to have a dozen.

“It’s a skill that does require the time and effort, but it’s a skill you’ll have for life.”
