IOPC launched an investigation following the incident
A local police superintendent has urged people ‘not to speculate’ about the arrests of two people at Tesco in Rochdale.
District Superintendent John-Paul Ruffle said: “We are aware of the strength of feeling surrounding the arrest of two people at Tesco on Silk Street, Rochdale on Tuesday 25 September and officers have been listening to concerns and feedback from members of the public, community groups and community leaders.
“Senior officers from Rochdale Police Station met with a number of community leaders last night to discuss this incident and the concerns of the local community.
“This particular matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which is independently investigating the incident.
“We would urge people not to speculate on the incident and due to this referral and the ongoing judicial process in relation to those arrested and charged, we are unable to comment further on the incident at Tesco at this stage.
“We are aware that a protest may take place this Sunday and we respect the right to lawful protest.
“Our officers are happy to be approached and will listen to any issues raised – whether on this incident or any other topics that you want to discuss. All matters of concern will be fed back to senior officers so that GMP can continue to provide the best possible service for the communities it serves.”
Nasir Hussain (17/12/89) and Mahira Hussain (04/07/90) both from Oldham, were charged with assault of a constable following an incident at the Silk Street store.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has since begun an investigation after Greater Manchester Police received a complaint alleging excessive use of force and discrimination by the arresting officers.
