Thieves smash pensioner's car window and steal her bag at Rochdale Cemetery

Date published: 02 October 2018

A pensioner visiting Rochdale cemetery had her handbag stolen from her car on Saturday (29 September).

The back-passenger window of the black Volkswagen Polo was smashed before thieves made off with a handbag, containing a sentimental family wedding ring.

The woman’s son, Mr Allen, said: “My mum's handbag contained my nan’s wedding ring, so my mum's mum, which is one of the graves she always goes to pay her respects to.

“We found out from the bank as well that they used the contactless cards three times in Asda and were denied at Morrisons in Heywood. I'm assuming the scumbags will be on CCTV, hopefully.

“The cemetery is going to check the CCTV, apparently it happened again a day later. I believe this has happened to somebody whilst they were actually at a funeral.

“They are absolute scum who really need catching.”

A police spokesman confirmed: “Between 5.30pm and 6.30pm on Saturday someone has smashed the window of a car and taken a handbag from inside.

“The card is believed to have been used several times that same day.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
