Council staff get active for National Fitness Day

Date published: 01 October 2018

Staff and councillors at Rochdale Borough Council stretched their legs to celebrate National Fitness Day.

The annual event, which encourages the nation to celebrate the fun of fitness by trying new activities, saw staff try out yoga, box fit, boogie bounce and guided walks around Rochdale.

There were also health checks for staff who wanted an assessment of their health, as well as massage and acupuncture sessions for those with injuries.

Staff were encouraged to ‘dress down’ in their active wear and allocated 30 minutes to attend a session.

Adele Hoolahan, healthy workplaces coordinator at Link4Life, said: “We are really pleased that so many people took part in National Fitness Day.

“The event is just once a year but it is a great opportunity to talk to staff and encourage them to consider their own wellbeing as a priority all year round.”

Research shows that to stay healthy, adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity every week and strength exercises on two or more days a week. By doing this people can decrease their risk of getting serious conditions, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers, as well as keeping muscles, bones and joints strong for longer.
