Ron Hill and Andy O’Sullivan receive lifetime achievement awards at final birthday run

Date published: 01 October 2018

Dr Ron Hill MBE and Andy O’Sullivan MBE were presented with lifetime achievement awards at the final Ron Hill birthday race in Whitworth on Tuesday (25 September).

The duo were bestowed the accolades by Jim Rhodes of Radcliffe AC at Ron Hill’s 80th birthday race, which saw more than 340 runners participate.

The 5k race was won by Chris Holdsworth, Ribble Valley Harrier, in 15.11, whilst first lady was Ribble Valley Harrier Hannah Oldroyd in 17.22.

Participants travelled from across the UK and even from Ireland to take part in the scenic route around Cowm Park Reservoir.

Dr Ron Hill, 80, has long been recognised as one of the world’s greatest long-distance athletes, once holding the world record for the Boston marathon after smashing the course record by three minutes, despite the bad weather.

A birthday race staged by Andems Runners has taken place locally in his honour for a number of recent years.

A commemorative mug was bestowed to all finishers with £1,000 donated to the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation for under privileged athletes.
