Rochdale Borough Council raised nearly £800 for Macmillan's coffee morning through activities at Number One Riverside and Rochdale town hall on Friday (28 September).
Town Hall chef Ian Sumner shaved his head to raise money for Macmillan, thanks to the generous donations of clock tower restaurant diners.
Ian said: “There were one or two hairy moments and a few close shaves but it was a lot easier than I thought mainly because my wife was doing the clipping.”
At Number One Riverside, council and Link4Life staff donated money to ‘dress down’ and held a bake sale with staff encouraged to put a health twist on their bakes.
Dianne David, assistant director of commissioning at Rochdale Borough Council, was awarded the healthiest baker prize and took home a one month leisure pass from Link4Life.
Since 2015 Macmillan’s brave shavers have raised over £16.8 million for cancer research.
The first Macmillan coffee morning took place in 1990, a small affair with a simple idea. Guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their cuppa to Macmillan in the process. It was so effective, it was repeated again the next year, this time nationally.
Since then, coffee mornings have raised over £165.5 million for Macmillan.
