Hopwood Hall Higher Education Graduation 2018
Over 70 higher education students graduated from Hopwood Hall on Thursday night (13 September) after a procession from the Rochdale campus to the Town Hall.
Awards were presented by keynote speaker, Professor Karl Dayson, Dean of Research at the University of Salford, and Hopwood Hall’s Principal, Derek O’Toole.
The evening was presented by Vice Principals Julia Heap and Mark Hilton, and Chair of the Hopwood Hall Corporation, Nazir Afzal OBE opened the ceremony with an inspiring speech.
He said: “You are now part of the top 5% in the country. You carry the hopes and wishes of millions of us. Your families have stood by you through thick and thin.
“Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion; you have to set yourself on fire. And remember, no-one can make you feel inferior without your consent.
“Reach for the stars, look for the truth and you will find it.”
Also joining the students and their families in celebrating their achievements were Mayor of Rochdale, Mohammed Zaman, and Heywood and Middleton MP, Liz McInnes.
Mayor Zaman said: “These are excellent achievements for the borough. We have the graduates from all different backgrounds in celebration with their parents and tutors, who have supported them on the way. These are very good results, carrying on from our great A-level and GCSE grades this year, and is a brilliant reason to celebrate.
Ms McInnes agreed: “I agree with everything the Mayor has said. It is always a pleasure to come to the graduation ceremony. Hopwood Hall contributes so much to the community and gives young people great opportunities.
“I was struck by the advice of Nazir Afzal, to get out there and lead the 21st century. The partnership with Salford University is fantastic and good for the whole borough.”
