Heywood Township honours Merchant Navy Day with flag raising

Date published: 11 September 2018

Heywood Township raised the Red Ensign to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the Merchant Navy in the second world war.

Councillor Peter Rush said: “On this Merchant Navy day, we raised the flag in support on a campaign by Seafarers UK to remember sacrifices, salute the courage and support the future of the often-unsung personnel of our merchant navy.”

Since 2000, Merchant Navy Day on 3 September has honoured the brave men and women who kept our 'island nation' afloat during both World Wars, and celebrated our dependence on modern day merchant seafarers who are responsible for 95% of the UK's imports.
