Hopwood DePree and Bob Wall at Hopwood Hall
Historic Hopwood Hall manor featured on BBC One’s The One Show on Monday (3 September).
Broadcaster Andy Kershaw, who was born in Littleborough, met Hopwood DePree and curator Bob Wall at the Grade-II* listed building to learn more about the estate.
The 12th century manor is the ancestral home of Hopwood DePree, an actor/producer from Los Angeles, who has an exclusive legal agreement with the council, which currently owns the estate, to enable him to have up to five years to rescue the building.
He will then assume full possession of his ancestral home, which has lay vacant for 30 years and is now on Historic England’s 'At Risk' register.
The old hall dates back to feudal days, and still retains many structural and architectural features from the 14th century right until present day, including some of the earliest English Gothic intricate wood carvings and elaborate ornate fireplaces.
A rescue mission to restore a ceiling designed by famed Middleton architect Edgar Wood recently took place at Hopwood Hall, which has been without electricity and running water for some decades.
Monday’s One Show is available to watch on BBC iPlayer until 1 October:
