Heywood kidney care centre given green light by planning

Date published: 04 September 2018

A kidney care centre in Heywood was unanimously given the green light by the Planning & Licencing Committee on Monday (3 September).

Located at the site of a former mill on Schofield Street, the centre, a satellite of Salford Royal Hospital, will provide renal dialysis, renal outpatient care and general nephrology services, replacing existing services at Rochdale Infirmary.

Over 600 annual appointments would be transferred to the Heywood kidney care centre from the Salford clinic

Speaking on behalf the applicant, Martin Mason from the architects, said: “People typically undergo dialysis three times each week for around four hours at a time.

“This centre is a central location to suit patients, is a purpose-built unit with good access and has the ability to increase. Careful consideration has gone into designing the building as not to impact on the surrounding.”

Both chairwoman Carol Wardle and Heywood councillor Peter Rush welcomed the application, praising the chosen location at the former mill, which has been empty for around six years, with the wider area of land associated lying unused for over 20 years.

The centre is hoped to be up and running in around a year, providing 24 treatment stations, four consulting rooms and other ancillary facilities.

Councillor Irene Davidson added: “This centre will save lives, and I support it all the way.”

Councillor Phil Burke agreed: “We should be really pleased to bring this facility to Heywood.”
