Level crossing barriers repaired at Smithy Bridge station

Date published: 24 August 2018

The level crossing at Smithy Bridge station has been repaired after a technical fault.

A spokeswoman for Rochdale Borough Council said: “On Thursday 23 August Rochdale Borough Council were informed by Network Rail that there was a technical fault with the level crossing at Smithy Bridge railway station.

“Alongside Greater Manchester Police, we carried out an emergency road closure which saw Smithy Bridge Road close for the afternoon and into the early evening of Thursday.

“The fault was corrected and the road was reopened on Thursday evening.”

Councillor Janet Emsley, Rochdale Borough Council’s cabinet member for neighbours, community and culture, said: “Thank you to those at Network Rail – who are responsible for the level crossing, GMP and the council who worked hard to ensure that people were safe and that the road was reopened swiftly.”

The level crossing has closed the road at least four times this year alone, due to the barriers becoming damaged or stuck.
