Five walk to Scarborough to raise money for the Stroke Association

Date published: 17 August 2018

A group of five people from Rochdale have walked over 121 miles to Scarborough to raise money for the Stroke Association.

Martin Greenwood, 32, who suffered a stroke four years ago, was joined by Harrison Briggs, 14, Declan Greenwood, 15, Corey Davies, 18, and Patrick Woolfenden.

The team set off from Gale Street, Syke, walking approximately 25 miles each day before reaching Scarborough five days later. After staying in Scarborough for four days, they set off on the return journey, walking part of the route back.

Martin said: “I really wanted to give something back to the Stroke Association: everyone who completes a charity walk seems to go to Blackpool, so we wanted to do something different. We took everything we needed in a pram and a trolley, which we pushed and pulled the entire way.

“We met lots of nice people on the journey and we would like to say thank you to all.”

The group has raised around £700 for the charity so far.

Rebecca Owen, Regional Fundraiser at the Stroke Association, said: “For many stroke survivors, getting their life back on track after a stroke means overcoming life-changing disabilities and emotional trauma, but they can’t do this on their own. Every day people across the UK are regaining their independence with the support of the Stroke Association and others.

“We are incredibly grateful to Martin for taking on this challenge to help raise funds for people affected by stroke; he is a real inspiration and proof that there is life after stroke.”

There are over 1.2 million people in the UK living with the effects of stroke, a brain attack which happens when the blood supply to the brain is cut off, caused by a clot or bleeding in the brain.

A cheque for the money raised will be presented to the Stroke Association at Bury Railway Station on 22 August.
