Police have released CCTV images and footage of people they would like to speak to after an incident of violent disorder in Heywood.

At 2.10am on Saturday 21 June 2008, CCTV cameras on Market Street, Heywood, recorded two men being assaulted by a group of men.

One of the victims was surrounded by men who continuously punched and kicked him, while a second victim was stamped on after he was knocked to the ground.

There were a number of people in the area at the time of the disorder and officers would like to identify and speak to those who witnessed the attack.

Detective Constable Sam Halligan of Rochdale CID said: “This was an extremely vicious attack but I’m quite surprised this was never reported to police.

“The CCTV footage and stills clearly show the people we need to speak to in relation to the assault, so if anyone knows who they are, or was a witness to the incident please get in touch.

“I believe the people involved are well known in the Heywood area and if you want to remain anonymous, you can contact Crimestoppers. Any information is vital to the investigation and will be acted on.

“As far as we know the two victims didn’t suffer any serious injuries, but judging by the ferocity of the attack, this is by luck more than anything.

“The people who took part in this violence need to be caught and held accountable for their behaviour.”

If anyone has any information about this incident or those involved, please contact Rochdale CID on 0161 856 4643 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
