Recycling team shortlisted for award as borough recycling rates hit almost 50%

Date published: 31 July 2018

Rochdale Borough Council has been shortlisted for the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) Annual awards for best service team: waste management and recycling.

The award ceremony, now in its 18th year, will be held on Wednesday 12 September in Edinburgh, where hopefully our team will come out on top.

The switch to three weekly collections in 2015 has helped increase the borough’s kerbside recycling rate from 37% - one of the lowest in Greater Manchester - to almost 53.7% last year.

Councillor Neil Emmott, cabinet member for environment at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “There is a growing understanding among companies, organisations and individuals of just how important recycling is.

"The team are close to achieving the original 50% recycling target two years early and this award nomination is a testament to their hard work.

“With the borough recycling over 59% of the waste collected at the kerbside in June 2018, this service is going from strength-to-strength and I would like to thank everyone across the borough who is playing a huge part in this recycling success.”
