Supermarket security praised by former councillor for detaining ‘aggressive thief’

Date published: 31 July 2018

A member of security at a local supermarket has been praised for his swift action in detaining a ‘very aggressive thief’ by a former councillor.

Jean Ashworth, former councillor for Smallbridge, witnessed the incident at the Morrisons store on Kingsway.

She said: “I have to say really well done to the security guard. What a nightmare job he had detaining a very aggressive thief. It was awful, he was lashing out and kicking anybody in his way. He had already broken plant pots in the foyer. Thankfully, security and staff managed to get him out into the back of the store until the police arrived.

“I couldn’t believe one member of the public telling the guard to put him down.

"When I was leaving, I saw three of his mates looking for him; the aggression and language was just awful. It’s just awful what the staff have to put up with on a daily basis and you witness it, it is frightening.

“The staff have a lot to put up with but are brilliant as is the security guard. I actually thanked the security guard for keeping us safe; it’s a nightmare for them.”

A Morrisons spokesman said: "Our stores should be pleasant and welcoming places to shop.

“We don't tolerate this kind of behaviour and we're working closely with the police."

Greater Manchester Police has been contacted for comment.
