Survey launched to find out more about school holiday food provision

Date published: 27 July 2018

It is estimated that three million children are at risk of ‘holiday hunger’ in the UK, a situation that occurs when a child's household is, or will become, food insecure during the school holidays.

In some parts of Greater Manchester, over 50% of children are living in poverty, with an alarming 41% of children living in poverty locally.

Holiday hunger is a particular problem for households whose children are in receipt of free school meals during term time, but there will be children facing food insecurity who are not in receipt of free school meals.

End Child Poverty Coalition have reported that more than half of Greater Manchester’s wards have child poverty rates of 25% or more, while the number of emergency food providers in the city region has more than doubled in five years.

As a result, The Greater Manchester Food Poverty Alliance, coordinated by Greater Manchester Poverty Action, is working with people and organisations from every borough of Greater Manchester on a more strategic and better coordinated response to food poverty.

Children living in poverty also do not have the same access to activities during the school holidays and so the groups are not only interested in projects which provide food, but also those who provide activities. In an ideal world, these projects would all provide activities.

Greater Together Manchester and Greater Manchester Food Poverty Alliance have launched a survey to find out more about the organisations providing school holiday activities and food provision across Greater Manchester.

The survey itself is a chance to both find out what projects/organisations there are already working on addressing ‘holiday hunger’, how many people are accessing these services and where the gaps are.

Unless otherwise stated, all information provided by you will be held in the strictest confidence, and any published results will be anonymised.

The questionnaire can be completed on a computer, tablet or smartphone and should take approx. 15 - 20 minutes:
