Geology graduate celebrates success with upper-second class honours

Date published: 24 July 2018

A graduate from Rochdale is celebrating success after receiving upper-second-class honours.

Leena Turner, 21, graduated with a 2:1 in Geology from the University of Derby, where she will be returning in September to complete a master’s degree in Applied Petroleum Geoscience and hopes to land a job in the petroleum industry.

As part of her studies, Leena completed an independent research and study project in 2017, where she spent one month on the islands of Malta and Gozo, studying the changes in building stone used on the islands from prehistoric to Roman times.

Whilst there, she self-catered, travelling to all the sites for her project, and also visited Tenerife and France as part of the course to study how the mountains were formed, how quickly they formed and where oil could potentially be trapped.

Leena is also awaiting a presentation date after completing her gold Duke of Edinburgh award earlier this year.

Addressing other students with high aspirations, Leena said: “Do what you want and push yourself, as you have to work hard for what you want in the future. It’s a good degree if you like travelling too.

“It’s all definitely been worth it.”

Her dad, Andrew, said: “Her parents, family and friends are all very proud of Leena.

“We all wish her the very best in her future studies and career.”
