Charity cricket match in memory of Peter Docker

Date published: 11 June 2018

A cricket match in memory of Peter Docker will take place at Rochdale Cricket Club on Saturday 14 July at 3pm.

Peter, a local businessman, was well known at both Rochdale Cricket Club and Norden Cricket Club, having been on the committee and helping run one of the junior teams.

He died on 19 October 2017 after an accident resulted in a subdural haematoma.

Both clubs have come together and decided that they wanted to have a memorial match for him. There will also be a raffle, cake stall and silent auction of a cricket bat signed by the England Cricket Team from England vs West Indies Test Series 2017.

Daughter Sarah hopes the fundraiser will raise enough “to do something positive in his memory”.

She said: “I am hoping that we can raise a few hundred pounds and do something positive in his memory. We recently installed a memorial bench at Rochdale Cricket Club as a fitting tribute to a true gentleman who will be missed by many.”

Sarah’s brother will also be partaking in the match, which will see funds donated to Blood Counts, which supports the haematology unit at Royal Oldham Hospital.

The Blood Counts charity was launched in March 2017 to raise funds for additional equipment and enhanced facilities in the unit, which treats patients with chronic long-term blood disorders and blood cancer.

Peter, who had two rare blood disorders, was being cared for by the ward when he died unexpectedly, having been admitted for chemotherapy to treat leukaemia.

Peter ran the family stationery business, WH Dockers, with his brother from the age of 16, some 56 years of hard work. A very popular man, he didn’t retire and loved his work and getting out meeting people.
