14-year-old Emily McNee, a student at Holy Family High School in Heywood, has won the schools public speaking competition organised by the Rotary Club of Heywood.
Beating competition from other schools within the borough, Emily spoke about the pressures of the new GCSE process and the impact it has had on young people's lives.
Emily wrote the speech herself, which was entitled: 'Is the education system failing our children?'
Steve McNee, Emily’s father, said: “How proud am I right now.
“It was a very passionately delivered piece of work that took the judges by surprise, with them complimenting Emily on how mature and factual she was.
“Very proud parents.”
Emily goes on to represent the area at the central competition to be held on Sunday 9 September at Manchester Conference Centre.
