Reverend of 24 years announces retirement

Date published: 17 July 2008

After 24 years of ministry service, the vicar of St. Aidan’s church is to retire later this month.

Reverend George Dobbs has enjoyed his 24 years at St. Aidan’s but feels it is now time to relax.

During his time as minister the church has been restored and the number of members has increased, achievements that Reverend Dobbs believes were his greatest during his time as minister.

Former Councillor Jean Hornby chose Reverend Dobbs as her chaplain during her year as Mayor in 2006 and valued him as her pastor and supportive friend.

Reverend Dobbs’ spiritual and pastoral care has made a great difference to people during the highs and lows of family life. At times of crisis his calm and relaxed manner has eased distress, and at times of celebration his pleasure has always added to the occasion.

Reverend Dobbs has worked hard to share his time with his own family, and the families in the parish. He has led spiritual growth groups and pilgrimages to Celtic sites throughout the UK and has spent part of his annual leave time with Monks as part of his own spiritual reflection.

St. Aidan's is well known for its musical tradition, which has been supported and promoted by reverend Dobbs himself, and many other social events have taken place at St. Aidan’s where George’s sense of humour has been greatly appreciated.

George’s approachability meant that all who met him were made to feel comfortable, and his light touch had led people on to organise a baptism, wedding or funeral at the church, and then returning to become part of the church family at St. Aidan’s.

Everyone at St. Aidan’s has described George Dobbs as a 'good' man, without ever being sanctimonious or judgemental.

Parishioner Malcolm Bywater said: “He is a man whose Christian values shine through and whose ministry has made a real difference to all who have had the privilege of knowing him as priest and friend.

“I’m very sorry to see him go as it’s been a long time. He’s been a superb vicar and he’s like a friend to everyone.”

A service to celebrate George’s 24 years of ministry is to be held on Saturday 26 July at 19:30pm, followed by a buffet. His last Sunday services are to be held on Sunday 27 July.
