Library prize for young readers

Date published: 11 July 2008

With summer around the corner Rochdale Council is encouraging children under 4 to use their library. Collect a ‘Bookstart Book Crawl’ sticker each time you visit and on your fourth visit you’ll be awarded a certificate, designed by a children’s book illustrator. ‘Bookstart Book Crawl’ supports the National Year of Reading’s Library membership scheme.

Librarian Freda Fletcher said it is important to enjoy books from a young age: “The new certificates are sure to be very popular with babies and young children and will hopefully become very special keep sakes of their first year as library members.”

To start collecting Bookstart Book Crawl certificates, just visit your library. You can also take your baby or toddler to one of a host of ‘Rhythm and Rhyme’ sessions being held across Rochdale in the coming weeks: Tuesday 22 July 10.30 am – Smithybridge Library, Thursday 24 July 10.00 am – Spotland Library, Thursday 24 July 2.00 pm – Wheatsheaf Library, Monday 28 July 10.30 am – Middleton Library, Monday 28 July 2.30 pm – Alkrington Library, Monday 28 July 3.30 pm – Belfield Library, Tuesday 29 July 10.30 am Norden Library, Tuesday 29 July 2.15 pm – Wardle Library, Thursday 31 July 2.30 pm – Langley Library, Friday 1 August 10.30 am – Littleborough Library.

The sessions will encourage people to read in businesses, homes, and communities around the country, providing new opportunities to read and helping people to access help and support through schools and libraries.
