Planning application for controversial supermarket development resubmitted

Date published: 31 January 2018

An application for a controversial development at the Lake Garage in Smithy Bridge has been resubmitted.

The original application for a Spar supermarket, which was withdrawn on 14 June 2017, was met with protests from local residents and businesses.

Over 150 people signed a petition at the Lake Supermarket, which was set up by owner Kapil Ranavaya, who was concerned about the impact two supermarket planning applications would have on his business. Both sites are located just walking distance away from the Lake Supermarket.

A further 43 objections were logged online via the council’s planning portal.

The new plans have been resubmitted with one slight amendment to the way articulated lorries would deliver at the proposed supermarket.

Initially, it was suggested that the lorries reverse around the building to a delivery bay at the rear of the premises. This has been amended to a loading bay behind the pavement of Smithy Bridge Road, situated between two entrance and exit points, one proposed where an existing bus stop is located.

Despite the uproar at the original plans, just one objection has been logged so far for the new submission.

In his objection, Mr F White notes there is “no mention of improving the road junction at the roundabout to allow the large vehicle to turn without mounting the kerb or driving over two lanes, as happens now".

He added: “There is no mention of delivery hours or opening hours of the store. Smithybridge is already served by two local independent shops which provide bill payment facilities, newspapers, lottery, basic household and groceries, a chemist, sandwich shop, takeaways, café and fish and chip shop.

"The addition of a named store like Spar will have a negative impact on the local independents losing trade throughout the year from residents and visitors to Hollingworth Lake.”
