Castleton Post Office temporarily closed due to ‘staffing issue’

The unexplained temporary closure of Castleton Post Office is due to a staffing issue, and hopes to be open again by the end of the week, says the Post Office.

The problem was also raised at the recent PACT meeting, as residents were not notified of any closure, leaving them without access to a local post office.

Councillor Billy Sheerin said: “The service at the Post Office has all but disappeared. Before Christmas, the premises was gutted, leaving just one counter with one person running it, who would shut it on his lunch break.

“I am very irate that it has been closed this week with no explanation. One pensioner got the bus to Castleton Post Office and found it closed. She then had to get a taxi to Sudden Post Office and back, which is not ideal.”

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We are very sorry to customers for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of Castleton Post Office. The Post Office is operated by an independent retailer, meaning that we do not own the premises and are therefore unable to reopen the branch ourselves.

“We understand that there has been a staffing issue at the branch, which should be resolved this week. Once again, we apologise to the community for this inconvenience.”

In August 2017, the branch was closed for refurbishment.
