Green Volunteers on a mission to make a difference

Date published: 08 July 2008

Green minded residents are invited to join a force with a difference. Rochdale Council’s Green Volunteer scheme is expanding its army in a mission to help ‘green sweep’ the town, and this Saturday (12 July) will see the volunteers launch their road-show of picture displays at Middleton Library.

No experience is necessary to become a Green Volunteer – just a love of the environment and a desire to have fun!

The displays will be on show at Middleton Library to give people a flavour of life as a Green Volunteer. Experiences can include engaging with communities to deliver local environmental improvements, woodland management, enhancing and tidying parks, bringing derelict allotments back into use, and arranging environmental events which promote green management and recycling.

Cabinet member for environment and sustainability, Councillor Wera Hobhouse, said: "The Green Volunteers deliver a fantastic service and make a real difference to the borough. I'd encourage anyone who's interested in becoming a Green Volunteer to get in touch and find out more."

Ian Trickett, Green Volunteer Co-ordinator for Rochdale Council, added: "Our Green Volunteers are hugely appreciated and they really do make a big difference to our local environment. There's something for everyone to get involved with, and as well as making a difference to our surroundings it's a great way to make new friends."

Dates and venues for further Green Volunteer road-shows will be publicised when they become available.

Rochdale Council provides the Green Volunteers with equipment, training, supervision and other support that is required.
